It became the first parish church north of the Spanish colonies, when the parish was established in 1664. Ten years later, it became the first cathedral in New France, the seat of the bishop, Fran\u00e7ois de Laval, who became the first Canadian bishop. The church received the title of basilica by Pope Pius IX in 1874, an acknowledgement of its importance as a place of pilgrimage.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, another honor was bestowed on Notre-Dame de Qu\u00e9bec in 2014, when Pope Benedict XVI allowed the installation of the only Holy Door outside of Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The present building houses several remnants of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8wUv3hPz9Uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its past history<\/a>. For example, the imposing columns found on each side of the central nave are vestiges of previous walls of the initial building, kept to better support the whole, more recent construction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pelerinagequebec.ca\/en\/nos-saints-fondateurs\/saint-francois-de-laval\/\"><span class=\"button\">Fran\u00e7ois de Laval<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2711 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/pelerinagequebec.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Basilique-cathedrale-de-quebec_ABL8378-pf.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"799\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>The walls of the Basilica-Cathedral are visible signs of a long and continuous history of renovations and reconstruction. Initial work began in 1647 and the first Mass was celebrated in 1650.
